Resurrecting and reapplying a Bone-Yard Unit: Our customer wanted a turbine generator
for their plant, and we found a 30 MW steam turbine in a bone-yard that fit the
requirements - almost. There was one major problem: This unit had a "down" exhaust,
and the customer needed an "up" configuration to support a grade-mounted installation.
No problem. We took the bottom half off, blocked the exhaust and manufactured
a new up exhaust. And to utilize supplemental 22-PSIG steam available from the
Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG), we cut a hole in the casing and welded in
an auxiliary uncontrolled admission. Then we upgraded bearings and seals, and
our Turbine Controls Upgrade group brought the unit into the 21st century. The
turbine reapplication process involved nearly every group within TurboCare - and
now the customer has a great machine for half the price of a new one.
