Sets-up and operates conventional lathes, mills, and/or boring machines/equipment for repair of metallic parts. Ensures that parts meet high quality machining standards. Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work pieces, sequence of operations and set-up requirements.

JOB OVERVIEW:

  • Operate mill and/or lathe and any other machines necessary to perform the job:  tool holders, jigs, fixtures, cutting heads and other necessary equipment.
  • Operate crane and other lifting equipment safely.  In some cases, manual lifting and carrying of in-process parts is required.
  • Rough and finish machine a wide variety of complicated work including new and the most intricate and difficult jobs, requiring separate machining to many co-related dimensions in diameters, faces, slots, and grooves with high demand for concentricity, parallelism, squareness, roundness and surface finish with a minimum of assistance.
  • Calculate and set proper tool position.  With the use of digital readout system, select proper feed, speed and depth of cut.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as verniers, micrometers, dial indicators, feelers, surface gauges, square, protractor, and any other instruments required to maintain dimensions and close tolerances.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires the use of advanced shop mathematics together with the use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, handbook formulas and all varieties of precision measuring instruments.
  • Thorough knowledge of machine shop practices, principles of mechanics, working qualities of metals.
  • More than five years experience.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE:
  • Consistently demonstrate the ability to lead by training others and following through on difficult projects while under time constraints.
  • Perform ongoing routine maintenance of assigned machines if required.
  • Operate machine tools only within capabilities.
  • Complete all records required at completion of operation and/or day.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned.
