Bell seals are designed to provide freedom of movement between turbine components
in order to accommodate thermal expansion during start-up and operation. But during
normal operation, oxide typically builds up on conventional bell seals, and they
may seize, damaging the inlet pipe and increasing steam leakage. Disassembly of
a seized bell seal can worsen the damage and even require costly weld repairs.
